Fred studied piano under Miriam Fox Withrow and completed his graduate studies at the University of Southern California.  Jean studied violin under Arthur Tahl and Catherine Wade Smith.  As a high school student, she was appointed concertmaster of the University of Washington Summer Institute orchestra. She also served as assistant concertmaster of the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra.
